This stunning blue-and-white bowl is a vintage Johnson Brothers oval vegetable serving bowl in the popular "Indies" pattern. The "Indies" pattern features a delicate, detailed central floral bouquet, surrounded by trailing floral vines on a fluted (swirled) rim. A distinct signature touch is the small bird perched atop one of the flowers along the top edge of the rim. Made of sturdy English Ironstone rather than delicate porcelain, it was designed to withstand daily use. The back stamp shows a detailed underglaze blue floral motif alongside the text: "INDIES MADE IN ENGLAND BY JOHNSON BROS. A GENUINE HAND ENGRAVING. DETERGENT AND ACID RESISTING. DISHWASHER SAFE. IRONSTONE." The serving bowl dates to the Mid-to-Late 20th Century (circa 1970s–1980s). While Johnson Brothers originally introduced the "Indies" pattern in the mid-1960s, the inclusion of modern care text on the back (explicitly noting "DETERGENT AND ACID RESISTING. DISHWASHER SAFE") highlights its mid-to-late 20th-century production era.
