This darling Antique Victorian silver-plated sugar, jam, or sweetmeat basket includes its original clear glass liner and matching fruit-embossed spoon. The silver-plated frame features delicate pierced lattice work (reticulation) resting on a flared pedestal base. It is accented with a beautiful, heavy twisted rope swing handle. The accompanying spoon is highly characteristic of the late 19th-century Victorian era. The bowl's interior features a detailed repoussé or embossed fruit design (typically strawberries, grapes, or currants), a technique intended to prevent sticky jam, jelly, or sugar from adhering to the metal surface. It retains its original clear glass insert featuring a radial starburst pattern on the base. The glass liners were designed to protect the surrounding silver plate from the corrosive acids present in sugars and fruit preserves. The set dates to the late Victorian to Edwardian Era (circa 1880–1910). Pieces styled like this were quintessential components of English and American afternoon tea services during the turn of the century. Today, they can hold candy, jam, or condiments.
