Antique Chinese export porcelain Swatow or provincial kitchen bowls/dishes, hand-painted in a simplified Famille Rose style. Each dish features a rustic, loose, hand-painted overglaze with pink peonies and deep green foliage, surrounding a central abstract flower bud or geometric medallion. The painting style is intentionally naive and quick, typical of wares made for everyday household use rather than elite imperial display. The porcelain has a distinct grayish-blue or celadon-tinted cast to the glaze rather than a bright, pure white. Impurities in the clay and wood-fired kilns characteristic of Southern Chinese provincial pottery centers cause this. In Chinese ceramics, this style is officially classified as Famille Rose enamels decorated on a celadon ground. Instead of painting the vibrant pink peonies and green leaves over a stark white surface, the artisans applied the thick, glass-like mineral enamels directly over the smooth, light green celadon coating. Each base shows classic signs of 19th-century folk-pottery firing: rough, unglazed foot rims with embedded black iron spots, pinholes, residual kiln grit adhering to the glaze, and one has a very faint marking.
